Running for a Cause: Ashwood Glen’s Terry Fox Event

Honouring a Legacy of Courage and Action

Terry Fox’s name is synonymous with grit and determination. His cause is one we all feel strongly about. Here at Ashwood Glen School, we are committed to nurturing compassionate, curious, and engaged learners, and our recent Terry Fox event was a perfect example of seeing that learning in action.

To start the day, we welcomed a representative from the Terry Fox Foundation, who shared Terry’s remarkable story and the enduring legacy of the Canada Marathon of Hope. Students were inspired by his courage, determination, and the impact one person can make, reinforcing the values of perseverance and social responsibility.

After the presentation, our students participated in the Terry Fox Run, bringing Terry’s mission to life. This year, we added an engaging, educational twist: students “traveled” across Canada during the run. As they passed each province, their Terry Fox passports were stamped, turning the activity into a fun and interactive way to learn about Canadian geography while supporting this important cause.

More than a run—what students learned:

  • Explored global citizenship and community engagement by reflecting on the difference individuals can make
  • Practiced inquiry and critical thinking by connecting the story of Terry Fox to their own actions
  • Developed resilience, perseverance, and empathy, key aspects of character development in the IB curriculum
  • Experienced learning that goes beyond the classroom, combining academic concepts, personal growth, and social responsibility

At Ashwood Glen, we believe that education is most impactful when students see the connection between learning and real-world action. Events like the Terry Fox Run allow students to engage fully with their community, develop meaningful skills, and leave inspired to make a positive difference. Through initiatives like this, we continue to nurture learners who are not only academically capable but also socially conscious, reflective, and ready to contribute to the world around them.
