End of Unit Action: Poetry Café

Poetry in motion

Spring is in the air, bringing with it thoughts of blossoms, warm breezes, and visits to local cafés for a latte and croissant. In many cafés, we might also discover local talent through live music or a poetry reading.

Inspired by that atmosphere, IB students at Ashwood Glen created their own Poetry Café to showcase the wonderful work they have produced. Drawing on all five senses, students crafted a variety of poems and enhanced the experience through performance, bringing their words to life for the audience.

Focus on the senses

Each grade explored a variety of poetic forms, including acrostics, cinquains, and haikus. Some poems were even written in French—mais très bon travail!

Students approached poetry through many different lenses. Some classes focused on the sensory imagery inspired by colours, while others explored the playful use of alliteration. Clear themes also emerged throughout the work; for example, the Grade 2 students centred their poetry on the idea of community.

Altogether, it was a rich and thoughtful exploration of how language can be used creatively and meaningfully through poetry.

Hooked on a feeling!

IB English Language and Literature studies go beyond simply reading and explaining a text. Students are encouraged to think critically, explore deeper meaning, and analyze how language is used—particularly through forms such as poetry. One powerful way to demonstrate this learning, as reflected in Bloom’s Taxonomy, is through creation. Through the writing process, students responded positively to the opportunity to transform an idea into a concept, shape it into written expression, and ultimately bring it to life through performance.
