PYP Exhibition: Inquiry in action, voices that inspire
As part of their final year in the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Ashwood Glen’s Grade 5 & 6 students embarked on a meaningful learning journey through the IB PYP Exhibition—a capstone that celebrates inquiry, action, and reflection. Over several weeks, our learners investigated real-world issues they care about, designed solutions, and presented their thinking with creativity and confidence.
What the PYP Exhibition is—and why it matters
The PYP Exhibition is more than a showcase. It’s a powerful demonstration of everything our students have been building toward: curiosity that leads to questions, research that leads to understanding, and action that leads to impact. It asks students to connect their learning across subjects, collaborate with peers and mentors, and communicate their findings to an authentic audience.
The journey: from questions to action
- Central ideas: Students began by framing big ideas around topics that matter—climate action, community wellbeing, sustainable cities, inclusion in sports, food security, and more.
- In-depth research: They gathered and evaluated sources, interviewed experts, analyzed data, and synthesized perspectives.
- Action plans: Learners transformed understanding into action—creating prototypes, awareness campaigns, donation drives, school-wide initiatives, and persuasive media.
- Interactive presentations: Exhibition day brought it all together. Students led booths, demonstrations, and Q&As, using visuals, models, and digital media to engage visitors.
Real-world connections
Every step of the process was student-led and collaborative, grounded in empathy and a desire to make a difference. Many projects connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), linking classroom learning with global citizenship and local community needs.
We are especially proud that Ashwood Glen is the exclusive Canadian Global Advocate for the UNSDG in schools, further reinforcing our commitment to helping students see themselves as changemakers who can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.
Skills that shine
Throughout the Exhibition, our students demonstrated:
- Research & critical thinking – Selecting reliable sources, evaluating evidence, and drawing conclusions.
- Communication – Presenting with clarity and confidence to peers, parents, and guests.
- Collaboration & leadership – Planning timelines, delegating roles, and reflecting together.
- Creativity & problem-solving – Designing practical, imaginative solutions with real impact.
- Agency & reflection – Setting goals, monitoring progress, and refining next steps.
IB Learner Profile in action
The Exhibition wasn’t just about what students know—it revealed who they are as IB learners: open-minded, principled, caring, reflective, courageous, and truly future-ready.
