IB Science Fair 2025-2026

Curious Minds, Sustainable Future

At Ashwood Glen, learning reaches far beyond the classroom walls. It nurtures curiosity, inspires creativity, and helps students see how they can make a positive difference in the world. This year’s Science Fair was a powerful example of that journey in action. Our IB students stepped confidently into the roles of young scientists and problem-solvers, exploring real-world challenges with enthusiasm and purpose. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), they demonstrated how thoughtful inquiry and imagination can lead to meaningful, sustainable solutions—giving families a glimpse of the capable, compassionate change-makers they are becoming.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) outline a shared global vision: to protect our planet, support human well-being, and build a more equitable future for everyone. At Ashwood Glen, these goals are woven into our International Baccalaureate (IB) learning approach, helping students connect their classroom experiences to real-world challenges.

Through exploring the SDGs, students investigate meaningful global issues while developing empathy, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. This learning journey encourages them to ask thoughtful questions, consider multiple perspectives, and understand how their actions can make a positive impact.

By engaging with these global themes, Ashwood Glen students grow into socially aware, confident learners—strong communicators and ethical decision-makers who are prepared to contribute thoughtfully to an ever-changing world.

This year’s Science Fair was a vibrant showcase of imagination, inquiry, and purposeful learning. IB students transformed big questions into hands-on investigations, connecting their classroom learning to real-world challenges. Each project highlighted creativity, collaboration, and a growing understanding of how science can drive meaningful change.

    • Powering Smart Solutions – Grade 6
IB students explored electricity by designing systems to lift and sort materials efficiently. Through research and experimentation, they applied engineering concepts while examining how innovation supports sustainable infrastructure.

    • Designing for a Changing Planet – Grade 5
IB students tackled the challenge of protecting drone sensors used in solar panel repair during extreme weather. Their testing and design process demonstrated how technology can support climate action and clean energy solutions.

    • Bending Light, Saving Energy – Grades 3/4
IB students investigated how light can be manipulated to conserve energy, discovering practical applications of physics connected to sustainability.

    • Clean Water, Clever Thinking – Grade 2
Using everyday materials, IB students designed water filtration systems, exploring environmental responsibility through hands-on problem-solving.

    • Weather Wonders in Action – Grade 1
Through engaging weather experiments, IB students deepened their understanding of climate and environmental change.

From hypothesis to experimentation, each project reflected the power of curiosity-driven learning. Our students demonstrated critical thinking and creativity, showing how young learners can thoughtfully engage with the world around them.

A Community United by Learning

Our Science Fair was a true celebration of collaboration and community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our Parent Engagement Committee (PEC) for enriching the experience through interactive, hands-on science extensions. Students had the opportunity to observe and safely interact with exotic animals and explore ancient animal bones with the Bio Troopers team, deepening their understanding of animal diversity, adaptation, and evolution in a memorable, experiential way.

The day concluded with a meaningful Green Pledge, as students and families committed to small but impactful actions at home to support a cleaner, greener Burlington. It was a powerful reminder that when a community learns and acts together, even everyday choices can create lasting positive change.
