Ashwood Glen French Café brings language learning to life

Une Journée à Paris

Ashwood Glen School’s IB French students from Grades 1–5 transported parents straight to Paris this week with a charming, student-designed French Café experience led by the wonderful Mme Soha. 🇫🇷💙 Add Row

From the moment families walked in, they were welcomed en français by confident, enthusiastic young hosts—demonstrating not just their language abilities, but the IB Learner Profile in action: communicators, risk-takers, collaborators, and open-minded global citizens.

An immersive language experience anchored in IB learning

The French Café highlighted how language learning in the IB Primary Years Programme extends far beyond classroom instruction. Students applied their French in authentic, meaningful contexts—strengthening communication skills, building cultural appreciation, and deepening their understanding of the global francophone world.

Parents enjoyed a beautiful range of student-created experiences, including:

🇫🇷 French presentations — sharing facts, stories, and reflections entirely in French
🧠 French trivia — testing parents on landmarks, culture, and vocabulary
🎶 French songs — performed with confidence and joy
🥐 French cuisine — croissants, madeleines, and traditional crêpes that completed the Parisian atmosphere

Every detail—from décor to dialogue—was thoughtfully curated by our students, showcasing their creativity, voice, and agency as young learners.

Fostering global citizenship through language

In the IB PYP, multilingualism plays a key role in cultivating international-mindedness. By engaging with French culture and language, students learn to understand perspectives beyond their own and recognize their place in an interconnected world.

Events like this French Café bring these ideals to life, empowering students to communicate with purpose, connect across cultures, and proudly share their learning with their community.

C’est seulement le début!

What a très magnifique afternoon of learning, laughter, and cultural celebration at Ashwood Glen.
Stay tuned for more celebrations of language, culture, and the IB spirit! 🇫🇷🌟
