Growing Global Citizens: Earth Projects & the UN SDGs at Ashwood Glen

Empowering students to shape a sustainable tomorrow

Earth Projects at Ashwood Glen

Ashwood Glen is honoured to be the Canadian representative for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) — and this term, our IB students lived those goals in action.

At Ashwood Glen, learning lives beyond textbooks — it grows in action, curiosity, and the choices students make every day. This term, our IB students explored what it means to care for the planet through hands-on Earth Projects, inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). These real-world activities helped students see how small habits — like turning off lights or choosing a reusable water bottle — help protect our shared world.

School planted the spark, but home is where it continues to grow.

When parents model sustainability through daily decisions, children see it as a normal and valued way of living. Awareness becomes habit — and habit becomes impact.

🍃 Fostering the IB Learner Profile through sustainability

These projects didn’t just teach sustainability — they strengthened IB attributes in meaningful, everyday ways. Students learned to be:

  • Inquirers — asking questions, investigating problems, gathering data

  • Thinkers — analyzing waste, energy use, resources, and solutions

  • Communicators — sharing ideas, reporting findings, encouraging peers

  • Caring — protecting the environment with compassion and awareness

  • Principled — making responsible choices, even when no one is watching

  • Reflective — reviewing results and planning how to improve next time

Through action, advocacy, and reflection, students developed more than environmental knowledge —
they grew character, confidence, and global citizenship. 🌍✨

“The Earth is what we all have in common.”

~ Wendell Berry

Through a series of hands-on Earth Projects, Ashwood Glen IB students discovered how small habits can protect our planet, reduce waste, and create meaningful change within our school community.

🔦 Week 1 — Turn off the lights

  • Students became Energy Detectives, checking for unused lights and creating reminder signs.
Try at home: A quick nightly light & plug “check-in” before bed.

♻️ Week 2 — Recycling right

  • Learners took on the role of Recycling Inspectors, checking bins for sorting accuracy.
Try at home: Label recycling stations together and create an art scrap box.

💧 Week 3 — Reusable water bottles

  • Students tracked how many peers used reusable vs. single-use bottles.
Try at home: Let your child choose a reusable lunch kit they love — ownership increases use.

🚗 + 🥪 Week 4 — Clean & Green week

  • Two projects, double impact:
Idle-Free Zone — counting idling cars
Zero-Waste Lunch — measuring what was thrown away
Try at home: One zero-waste lunch a week — cloth wraps, containers, reusable cutlery.

🔧 Week 5 — Fix it, don’t toss it

  • Students created a Repair & Reuse Station, giving materials a second life.
Try at home: Fix toys, books, or supplies together instead of replacing them.

Why it matters

These projects showed students that sustainability isn’t abstract — it’s practical, daily, and achievable. Ashwood Glen IB students learned that:

✨ Small actions add up
✨ Awareness leads to change
✨  They have the power to make a difference

Through curiosity, responsibility, and hands-on learning, our students are becoming thoughtful global citizens — one light switch, one repaired book, one bottle refill at a time

““We’re interconnected. What we do to the planet, we do to ourselves.”

~ David Suzuki
