Connecting Communities, One Letter at a Time: French Pen Pals Across Ontario

Bringing French to Life Beyond the Classroom

At Ashwood Glen, language learning is about more than vocabulary and grammar—it’s about making meaningful connections. As part of their French program, our IB Grades 3–6 students have launched a special pen pal exchange with Elmwood School in Ottawa, giving them an authentic opportunity to communicate in French with students from another Canadian community.

Through handwritten letters, our learners are putting their French skills into practice in a real-world context while building friendships that extend beyond the classroom.

Authentic Language Learning

Writing to a real audience gives students a meaningful reason to use French. Throughout the exchange, they are applying what they have learned in class by introducing themselves, sharing their interests, describing their daily lives, and asking thoughtful questions—all in French.

This authentic experience helps students:

  • Strengthen their French reading and writing skills.
  • Expand their vocabulary through meaningful communication.
  • Build confidence expressing themselves in another language.
  • Recognize language as a tool for connection and understanding.

By communicating with peers their own age, students experience French as a living language rather than simply a school subject.

Building the IB Learner Profile

The pen pal exchange also reflects the values of the IB Primary Years Programme, encouraging students to become:

  • Communicators by expressing their ideas clearly in French.
  • Open-minded by learning about another Canadian community and appreciating different perspectives.
  • Inquirers by asking meaningful questions and engaging in authentic conversations.
  • Caring by developing respectful and thoughtful relationships through written communication.
  • Reflective by considering how language helps us connect with others.

More Than a Letter

In today’s digital world, receiving a handwritten letter is something special. Students eagerly await each new envelope, excited to read about their pen pals’ experiences and respond with stories of their own.

The exchange encourages patience, thoughtful communication, and genuine curiosity while demonstrating that meaningful friendships can begin with a simple letter.

Learning That Connects Communities

This French pen pal project is more than a language activity—it’s an opportunity for students to apply their learning in an authentic way while developing confidence, cultural awareness, and communication skills.

As the letters continue to travel between Burlington and Ottawa, so too will new ideas, new perspectives, and new friendships.

At Ashwood Glen, we believe the best learning happens when students use their knowledge with purpose. Through experiences like this, our learners don’t just study a language—they use it to connect with the world around them.

Inspire. Empower.Excel.
