Little Canada, Big Learning

Learning beyond the classroom

At Ashwood Glen School, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. As part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) approach, students engage in meaningful, real-world experiences that deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and foster connections across disciplines. Experiential learning is a cornerstone of an IB education, and field trips play an important role in transforming classroom concepts into authentic experiences.

Big Fun

In May, our JMS students visited Little Canada, an immersive attraction featuring intricately detailed miniature landscapes that celebrate the diverse geography, history, culture, and communities of Canada. For a country as vast and varied as ours, Little Canada offers a unique opportunity to explore many of its iconic regions and landmarks in a single visit.

Students discovered remarkable recreations of destinations such as Niagara Falls, the Bay of Fundy, Rogers Pass, the Rocky Mountains, the Okanagan Valley, and the Northwest Passage. These exhibits sparked inquiry and discussion about Canada’s physical geography, natural resources, transportation networks, and cultural identity.

From Theory to Experience

The experience created meaningful connections across multiple subject areas, including social studies, geography, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts. As students observed the craftsmanship and innovation behind each exhibit, they were encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and consider the many factors that shape our country.

Field trips are more than a day away from school—they are vibrant extensions of the classroom that transform abstract concepts into tangible experiences. By connecting learning to the real world, students deepen their understanding, strengthen their curiosity, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to engage thoughtfully with an increasingly complex world.
