Celebrating Canada’s Own Robert Munsch: Ashwood Glen’s Book Week

A love of reading is one of the most powerful gifts a child can develop—one that supports learning, imagination, and confidence for years to come. This year, our Book Week celebrations shone a spotlight on one of Canada’s most beloved children’s authors, Robert Munsch, whose hilarious stories, memorable characters, and playful storytelling have delighted generations of readers.

Throughout the week, students across all grades stepped into the wonderfully unpredictable world of Robert Munsch. From familiar favourites to creative classroom activities, students explored his stories through read-alongs, interactive activities, discussions, and hands-on learning that encouraged imagination, self-expression, and a genuine enjoyment of books.

Reading, Writing, and a Little Munsch Magic :

• Writing to Robert Munsch: JMS students put pen to paper and wrote personal letters to Robert Munsch, sharing their thoughts and questions about his books. Their letters were even shared with his publisher!
• Reading Buddies: JMS students became reading buddies, visiting our Casa classrooms to share stories and enjoy the magic of reading together.
• Finding Their Voice: Through reflective writing activities, students explored their own ideas, reactions, and connections to the stories they read.
• A Little Munsch-Inspired Mischief: Casa students embraced the playful spirit of Robert Munsch with a Crazy Hair Day, bringing plenty of creativity, colour, and fun to Book Week.
• Looking Beneath the Story: Students took a deeper dive into Munsch’s storytelling, discussing character traits and exploring the literary devices authors use to make stories engaging, memorable, and meaningful.
• Sharing the Love of Reading: Our Book Fair gave students the opportunity to discover new stories and choose books of their own, while our community also came together to donate books and help spread the joy of reading beyond our classrooms. 

Book Week was about much more than celebrating a favourite author. Robert Munsch’s stories remind us that reading can be funny, surprising, imaginative, and full of possibilities. His characters encourage children to embrace their individuality, see the humour in everyday experiences, and approach the world with curiosity.

Through storytelling, creativity, and plenty of laughter, our students experienced the joy of getting lost in a good book—and the many ways stories can bring us together.
