Stepping Back in Time: Our Pioneer Village Field Trip

Experiencing Life in the 1800s

No electricity. No screens. No modern conveniences—could you imagine life in the 1800s? Our JMS students recently had the opportunity to experience it firsthand. They stepped back in time during their visit to Pioneer Village, where history came to life in the most engaging and memorable way. Walking through the village felt like entering the 1800s, as students explored historic buildings, interacted with costumed guides, and experienced firsthand what daily life was like in a different era.

From learning about traditional trades and crafts to understanding how families lived, worked, and supported their communities, students were fully immersed in the past. They observed the simplicity of life without modern technology and gained a deeper appreciation for the resilience, resourcefulness, and collaboration that defined the time.

Bringing IB Learning to Life

This experience connects strongly to the principles of the IB program, particularly through inquiry-based learning and real-world exploration. Rather than simply reading about history, students were encouraged to ask questions, make observations, and think critically about how and why life has changed over time. They explored perspectives, considered the challenges people faced in the 1800s, and made meaningful connections to their own lives today.

The trip also fostered key IB learner profile attributes. Students were able to demonstrate curiosity as inquirers, reflect on their learning as thinkers, and develop a greater sense of empathy as caring individuals. By considering the experiences of people from the past, they were able to walk a mile in their shoes. Through discussion and collaboration, they strengthened their communication skills and deepened their understanding of historical context.

The Power of Experiential Learning

Field trips such as this highlight the power of experiential learning. By engaging directly with history, students are able to build knowledge in a way that is both meaningful and lasting. Our visit to Pioneer Village was not just a trip—it was an opportunity to connect the past with the present, sparking curiosity and inspiring a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

We look forward to offering more experiences that challenge and inspire our students as they grow into thoughtful, informed individuals. After all, without understanding where we’ve been, how can we know where we’re going?
