Making the Transition from Public to Private School

Choosing a new school is a significant decision, and moving from a public school to an independent school can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Will my child adjust? Will they make friends? Will they be able to keep up? Will they feel like they belong?

These are natural questions. But transitioning to a private school doesn’t mean your child has to arrive already knowing how everything works or already feeling confident. They simply need the opportunity to learn, grow, and find their place.

A new school can open the door to an environment that reflects your family’s values, supports your child’s individual learning style, and encourages them to discover what they are capable of. With the right support, students can adapt, build confidence, form meaningful connections, and thrive.

Yes, your child can succeed in an independent school. And yes, they can belong here.

A Parent’s Checklist: Finding the Right Fit

As you explore schools, consider asking:

  • Does the school’s philosophy align with our family’s values?
Look beyond the curriculum. Consider how the school approaches learning, relationships, character development, and community.
  • How does my child learn best?
Consider whether your child thrives through inquiry, hands-on experiences, collaboration, independent work, structured instruction, or a combination of approaches.
  • What does the classroom environment look and feel like?
Ask about class size, student-teacher relationships, individualized support, and opportunities for students to actively participate in their learning.
  • How will my child be supported through the transition?
Ask how the school welcomes new students, introduces routines, builds relationships, and helps children develop a genuine sense of belonging.
  • What skills will my child develop beyond academics?
Consider how the school nurtures communication, collaboration, creativity, resilience, independence, and critical thinking.
  • Does the school feel like a community we want to be part of?
Visit the school, speak with teachers, and observe the learning environment. Notice how students interact, how teachers engage with them, and whether the school’s values are reflected in everyday school life.

More Than Finding the Right Fit

There is no single school that is right for every child. What matters is finding a learning environment where your child is known, supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow.

A transition may come with a period of adjustment, but it can also be the beginning of something exciting. Children often surprise us with how quickly they adapt when they feel welcomed, supported, and confident in their ability to succeed.
Could Ashwood Glen be the right fit for your family?

If you’re considering a move from public to private school, you may be wondering whether your child will feel comfortable, confident, and successful in a new environment. At Ashwood Glen, we understand that every child arrives with their own strengths, interests, experiences, and ways of learning. Our goal is to create an environment where students feel known and supported while being encouraged to challenge themselves, explore their interests, and grow as learners and individuals.

Making the transition to an independent school is a big step. But your child doesn’t have to arrive knowing exactly where they fit. They just need a place where they are welcomed, supported, and given the opportunity to find their place.
Perhaps that place is Ashwood Glen.
