Budgeting, saving, and managing money are life skills many of us wish we had learned earlier in life. At Ashwood Glen, we believe it is never too early to begin building this understanding, and this week our students had the opportunity to take their first steps in doing just that through a meaningful, hands-on experience.
Students in Grades 2–6 participated in an interactive financial literacy workshop led by Tandia Credit Union. Rather than simply reading about money management, students were fully immersed in real-world simulations that challenged them to think critically and make decisions. They earned a paycheque, planned a night out in Toronto, and navigated the responsibility of managing monthly expenses—all while responding to unexpected costs and other budgetary choices along the way.

As the experience unfolded, students naturally applied and strengthened their math skills, using addition, subtraction, and problem-solving in practical ways. At the same time, they were introduced to important financial concepts such as budgeting, cash flow, compound interest, credit scores, and high-interest debt—topics that are often reserved for much later stages of education, yet were made accessible and engaging through this activity.
What made this experience especially powerful was the emotional connection students had to their decisions. They experienced moments of excitement when they had extra funds, and moments of reflection when they had to rethink their choices or adjust their plans. These real-world scenarios helped them understand that financial decisions are not just mathematical—they are also about responsibility, planning, and balance.
Experiences like this go beyond the classroom curriculum. They help students develop confidence, independence, and a stronger sense of responsibility as they begin to understand how money works in everyday life. By engaging in these practical scenarios early, students are better prepared to make thoughtful, informed decisions as they grow.
When it comes to managing money, strong habits, early awareness, and real-world understanding are what turn everyday choices into long-term succession in daily life. At Ashwood Glen, we are proud to provide opportunities that help shape not only capable learners, but confident citizens prepared for their future.

Ashwood Glen is honoured to be named Best Private School in Burlington for the second year in a row. This achievement reflects our dedication to future-focused, globally connected learning and our commitment to helping every student reach their full potential.
