Sweet Success: A Student Initiative

A Sweet Idea Comes to Life

Raise your hand if you have a sweet tooth. If you’re anything like us, you enjoy a sweet treat every once in a while. Well, the grade 2 class at Ashwood Glen has got you covered! They were discussing needs vs. wants in Social Studies; through this discussion, they decided to open a candy store.

Preparing for Business

They began by surveying teachers and students to determine demand. Prices were also decided upon for each item. Lastly, they named the shop “Super Candy Store” and scheduled shifts. The doors were ready to open for business.

Running the Store and Giving Back to the Community

During each shift, students were responsible for counting money and providing change. They were very gracious with their customers, even when it got overwhelming; always greet your customers in a friendly manner to build a long-lasting relationship.

By the end of the week, they had raised $116.20 in just 5 days! It was decided that the money would go to charity. After debating, the students decided upon the Burlington Humane Society. They felt strongly that help should begin within their community, and the Burlington Humane Society is an animal shelter that works to find ‘furever’ homes for pets in need.

Learning Through IB Connections and Building Real-World Skills

Students were required to utilize many skills across several curricula areas, fitting in precisely with IB programming. They flexed their math skills through data gathering, calculating frequency, and addition/subtraction skills with currency.

Additionally, they expressed creativity by generating their shop signs and names. They used real-world skills through scheduling shifts and working.  Entrepreneurial skills, dealing with customers, and other important talents were developed, as well. This hands-on experience allowed students to apply their learning in a meaningful, real world context while building confidence and independence.

Overall, it was a success! Both humans and our furry friends benefited. Sweet tooth satisfied!
