Honouring Remembrance Day at Ashwood Glen

Learning from the past, leading with purpose

At Ashwood Glen School, Remembrance Day is more than a moment of silence — it is a moment of learning, reflection, and deep gratitude. Last week, our IB students had the honour of hearing directly from Tim and Hillary Speed of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, who shared the profound significance of November 11 and the responsibility we all carry to honour those who served and sacrificed.

Learning through experience

Our Ashwood Glen student ambassadors proudly represented the school at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s Remembrance Day ceremony, standing alongside veterans, active servicemen and women, families, and community members dedicated to protecting the peace and freedoms we often take for granted.

One of the most powerful moments of the day was witnessing the historic Avro Lancaster take off and land — one of only two in the world still flying, right here in Hamilton. Watching this remarkable aircraft in motion connected students to history in a visceral, unforgettable way, reminding them that remembrance is not just about the past, but about understanding the human stories behind it.

An IB World School perspective: global citizenship rooted in history

As an IB World School, Ashwood Glen is part of a global educational movement founded in the aftermath of World War II — a time when societies around the world committed to building a more peaceful, interconnected future for generations to come.

The IB framework emphasizes:

  • International-mindedness

  • Empathy and compassion

  • Peace-building and intercultural understanding

  • Learning from the past to shape a more united future

Through our IB program, students learn to see themselves not only as learners, but as global citizens who hold the power — and responsibility — to contribute to a kinder, more cooperative world.

Honouring the legacy, inspiring the future

Remembrance Day reminds us that courage, sacrifice, and service must never be forgotten. At Ashwood Glen, we honour this legacy by encouraging our students to think critically, act compassionately, and understand the impact their choices can have on the world around them.

By reflecting on the past, our students build the mindset and values needed to contribute to a more peaceful, just, and compassionate future — locally and globally.

We honour those who served. We remember their sacrifices. And we remain committed to shaping future leaders who carry these values forward.

🌎 Lest we forget.
