Risk-Taking in Action
Toward the end of each school year, excitement fills the halls as students prepare to share their learning with their families. Student-Led Conferences (SLCs) are a meaningful part of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Ashwood Glen School, providing students with an opportunity to showcase their growth, reflect on their achievements, and demonstrate the confidence and courage that characterize the IB Learner Profile attribute of Risk-Taker.
More than just a conference, SLCs place students at the centre of the conversation, empowering them to take ownership of their learning and demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and understanding they have developed throughout the year.
What Are Student-Led Conferences?
Student-Led Conferences bring together students, parents, and teachers to discuss, celebrate, and reflect on learning. Unlike traditional parent-teacher conferences, where adults lead the conversation, SLCs give students the opportunity to share their progress and learning experiences firsthand.
What Makes Them Powerful?
Traditional parent-teacher conferences often focus on adults discussing a student’s progress while the student remains a passive participant—or is absent altogether. Student-Led Conferences change that dynamic.
When students explain their own learning, they become active participants in the educational process. They share examples of their work, discuss challenges and successes, reflect on their growth, and identify goals for continued learning.
In preparation for their conferences, students complete portfolios, select evidence of learning, clarify key speaking points, and reflect on important experiences from the year. This preparation encourages students to think deeply about both what they have learned and how they have learned it.
The result is a learner-centred dialogue that promotes ownership, confidence, and engagement. For many students, leading a conference is itself an act of risk-taking. It requires them to communicate their thinking, answer questions, reflect honestly on challenges, and share their learning with an audience.

How They Work
A core principle of the PYP is planning with students rather than for students. Student-Led Conferences reflect this philosophy by involving learners in every stage of the process.
Students may:
- Reflect on what successful learning looks like.
- Select work samples that demonstrate growth and understanding.
- Organize displays and portfolio evidence.
- Practice communication skills and presentation techniques.
- Develop questions and talking points that guide discussion.
While students prepare carefully, the conferences remain authentic and flexible, allowing for meaningful conversations, curiosity, and reflection.

Evidence of Learning, Reflection, and Growth
At the heart of every Student-Led Conference is reflection. Students use evidence from their learning to demonstrate growth, celebrate achievements, and identify next steps. Through this process, they learn to evaluate their progress, recognize their strengths, and take ownership of future goals.
At Ashwood Glen, Student-Led Conferences exemplify our commitment to developing confident, reflective, and self-directed learners. By sharing their learning journey with others, students demonstrate the courage and confidence of an IB Risk-Taker while building the communication, reflection, and leadership skills that will support them throughout their educational journey and beyond.
