Showcasing a Year of Growth and Learning
Last week was an important one for the grade 5/6 classes here at Ashwood Glen School. It culminated in a presentation showcasing the many skills students developed throughout the academic year. All the hard work, dedication, and effort of the last semester were on full display. The IB PYP Exhibition (PYPX) was held.
To start, students thought about their central idea; something they could really sink their teeth into! Through a brainstorming session, students identified issues they felt passionate about that could be explored on both a community and global level. Once they landed on a topic, they then used concept-driven questions to guide their thinking.

From there, they moved on to research their line of inquiry. Students covered a broad range of topics, from climate goals as outlined in the Paris Agreement to how to build stronger communities through responsible action. It truly is amazing to see how decisions made on a community level have an effect globally.
Throughout their PYP Exhibition journey, students also explored connections to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using them as a framework to better understand real-world challenges and responsible action. From climate action and sustainable communities to quality education and equality, students examined how local actions can contribute to global change. By connecting their inquiries to the SDGs, students developed a deeper understanding of their role as globally minded citizens and reflected on how thoughtful, informed action can help create a more sustainable and compassionate future.
As IB students, they use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse complex problems and take responsible action. They exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions, which was also reflected in this month’s focus within the IB Learner Profile. Critical thinking involves the ability to analyse, synthesise, and evaluate information while reflecting on one’s own reasoning and perspectives. Researchers from Oxford’s Department of Education have found that students who participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) demonstrate stronger critical thinking skills than their non-IB peers—something clearly evidenced throughout our students’ PYPX efforts.
The PYP Exhibition was far more than a final presentation—it was a reflection of our students’ growth as thinkers, researchers, collaborators, and compassionate members of a global community. Through their inquiry, creativity, and determination, they demonstrated not only what they have learned, but who they are becoming. We are incredibly proud of the confidence, insight, and sense of responsibility our Grade 5 and 6 students displayed throughout this journey, and we look forward to seeing them continue to thrive as they move forward in their IB experience at Ashwood Glen School.
